In this episode of Peace Notes, we sit down with Pastor Cliffton Knight to reflect on the story of Elijah from the book of Kings — a prophet who, despite his miraculous victories, fled in fear when faced with the threat of Jezebel.

Elijah had just defeated the false prophets on Mount Carmel when he received a chilling message from Jezebel: “Tomorrow, your life will be like one of the prophets you killed.” Without hesitation, Elijah ran for his life. As Pastor Knight put it, “An angry woman is fiercer than a charging bull,” and Elijah, overwhelmed, chose to escape.

But here’s where the deeper lesson comes in. Instead of turning to God — as Psalm 46 reminds us, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” — Elijah ran away, feeling completely alone.

Pastor Knight urged us to remember that no matter what we face — fire, water, lions’ dens, or prison gates — God shows up. He showed up for Peter in prison, for Daniel in the lions’ den, and for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fire. He promises in Isaiah: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you… when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned.”

Another powerful point from this conversation was the danger of comparison. Elijah believed he was the only faithful prophet left — but that wasn’t true. Pastor Knight reminded us of Jesus’ parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector: it’s not about who appears more righteous. The tax collector, humble and repentant, “went home justified,” while the Pharisee, full of pride, did not.

STAY HUMBLE

We must see ourselves not higher or lower than others, but as God’s beloved children — not seeking approval from men, but walking quietly and faithfully in God’s purpose for us.

As Pastor Knight summarized: “Don’t let fear make you run away from God. Don’t let comparison steal your joy. See yourself through God’s eyes — no higher, no lower — simply as His child.”

Thank you for joining us for Episode 12 of Peace Notes. May you find courage, humility, and hope in knowing that God is always present, even when you feel alone.
